Tuff Power Down vs Gravity Down

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Differentiate between Gravity Down and Power Down hydraulic units.
  • Identify the cylinder requirements for each hydraulic unit style.
  • Categorize unit styles by their method of lowering the load.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Service Manual — Identify specific wiring and valve layouts for the unit style being serviced.
  • Hydraulic Pressure Gauge — Monitor pump output during lifting or downward drive cycles.
  • Voltmeter — Verify electrical signals at the solenoids for power-down or release valve functions.

Gravity Down (power-up / gravity-down) units use the pump to lift and the load's weight to lower through a release valve.

Power Down (power-up / power-down) units drive the cylinder in both directions and are used on double-acting cylinders where gravity is not enough.

Identify the unit style before troubleshooting; wiring and valve layout differ between the two.

How It Works

Gravity Down Mechanics

Gravity Down units, also known as power-up / gravity-down units, utilize the pump solely to lift the load. To lower, these units rely on the weight of the load acting upon the cylinder to force fluid back through a release valve.

Power Down Mechanics

Power Down units, or power-up / power-down units, drive the cylinder in both directions. These are required for double-acting cylinders where gravity is insufficient to retract the cylinder or lower the load.

Identification and Layout

Successful troubleshooting requires identifying the unit style first. The wiring and valve layouts differ significantly between Gravity Down and Power Down systems, meaning diagnostic steps for one cannot be applied to the other.

Diagnostic Chart

SymptomCheckSpec / ExpectedLikely cause & fix
Cylinder will not retract on a Power Down unit.Verify the unit is driving the cylinder in both directions and check for power at the downward solenoid.Per the applicable manualThe unit is intended to drive the cylinder down, but the downward drive circuit or valve is failing.

Load will not lower on a Gravity Down unit.Inspect the release valve and ensure the load weight is sufficient to retract the cylinder.Per the applicable manualThe release valve is not opening or there is insufficient weight to overcome system friction.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Assuming all hydraulic units use the pump to lower the load.
  • ✕ Attempting to troubleshoot wiring without first identifying the unit style.
  • ✕ Using a Gravity Down unit on a system that requires a double-acting cylinder.
  • ✕ Mistaking a release valve for a directional control valve.
  • ✕ Applying Power Down diagnostic steps to a Gravity Down valve layout.
