LESSON 8 OF 12

KWR-003 Installation and Key-Fob Programming

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Install the receiver with protected mounting, correct antenna placement, and documented power connections.
  • Interpret receiver indications and distinguish wireless shutdown from loss of pendant control.
  • Program fobs safely and recognize programming-window and storage limits.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Digital multimeter — Check receiver supply voltage and investigate voltage loss across power and ground connections.
  • Insulated hand tools — Disconnect battery power before installation and secure the documented electrical connections.
  • Drill and drill bits — Prepare receiver mounting holes while avoiding wiring and hydraulic components.
  • Needle-nose pliers — Carefully reposition the programming shunt without bending adjacent pins.
  • Wire brush — Clean accessible ground-contact surfaces before securing the ground connection.

The KWR-003 wireless remote is supplied preprogrammed. Mount the receiver preferably in a sealed box where it is protected from harm. Its antenna must be outside rather than inside a metal box. Connect the pin connector to the power unit.

Connect the red ring terminal to the start-solenoid terminal that also receives battery positive. Connect the black ring terminal to the motor housing or the negative terminal of a two-terminal DC motor. The power unit must be grounded directly to battery negative. The handheld pendant connects to the receiver's receptacle connector. The documented control pairings are Up or OUT and Down or IN.

Press Up and Dn together to turn receiver power on or off. With the receiver off, its LED does not illuminate. With it on, green flashes every 3 seconds indicate supply above 9 V; red flashes every 3 seconds indicate supply below 9 V. During a key-fob button press, the receiver LED remains on and goes out when the button is released. The receiver shuts down after 20 minutes idle. Press both buttons to turn it back on; the wired pendant remains active during shutdown.

Before programming, remove the wired pendant to prevent accidental operation. A shunt on pins 1 and 2 selects programming mode, shown by red flashing. Press a fob button; after storing the signal, the receiver flashes green for 2 seconds and then red. Repeat for additional fobs, then move the shunt to pins 2 and 3 for programmed/holding mode. Operate the transmitter within 3–5 seconds in programming mode or the receiver returns to its previous frequency. The system operates at 315 MHz and stores up to four fobs; teaching a fifth drops the first programmed fob.

How It Works

Protected mounting and a complete electrical path

The KWR-003 is supplied preprogrammed; mount its receiver where it is protected from harm, preferably in a sealed box, with its antenna outside any metal box because metal can shield radio signals. Connect the pin connector to the power unit, the red ring terminal to the start-solenoid terminal that also receives battery positive, and the black ring terminal to the motor housing or the negative terminal of a two-terminal DC motor. Ground the power unit directly to battery negative and connect the pendant to the receiver receptacle; resistance in a power or ground connection can reduce the voltage available during operation.

Power indications and shutdown are different from isolation

Press Up and Dn together to switch receiver power on or off: an off receiver has no illuminated LED, while an on receiver flashes green every 3 seconds above 9 V or red every 3 seconds below 9 V, where operation may be unreliable. During a key-fob button press, the receiver LED remains on and goes out when the button is released; the documented control pairings are Up or OUT and Down or IN. After 20 minutes idle, the receiver shuts down and can be restarted by pressing both buttons, but the wired pendant remains active, so wireless shutdown is not an electrical isolation method.

Programming sequence and memory limits

Remove the wired pendant before programming to prevent accidental operation, then place the shunt on pins 1 and 2 and confirm red flashing. Press a fob button within 3–5 seconds; successful storage produces green flashing for 2 seconds followed by red, and after repeating for additional fobs, move the shunt to pins 2 and 3 for programmed/holding mode. Missing the programming window returns the receiver to its previous frequency; the system operates at 315 MHz, stores up to four fobs, and drops the first programmed fob when a fifth is taught.

⚠ CAUTION Remove the wired pendant before programming to prevent accidental operation; the receiver may not operate below 9 V.

Diagnostic Chart

SymptomCheckSpec / ExpectedLikely cause & fix
Wireless operation stops after inactivity, but the pendant still works.Observe the receiver LED and press Up and Dn together to restore receiver power before investigating a component failure.Idle shutdown: 20 minutes. The wired pendant remains active during shutdown.Normal receiver idle shutdown rather than necessarily a failed receiver or power unit.
Basis: KTI-Wireless-Instruction-Manual-1
The receiver flashes red and wireless operation is unreliable.Measure receiver supply voltage and inspect the red battery-positive connection, black motor-ground connection, and direct power-unit ground to battery negative.Red flashes every 3 seconds indicate supply below 9 V; the receiver may not operate below 9 V.Insufficient receiver supply voltage; determine whether the loss originates at the battery or along the power and ground paths.
Basis: KTI-Wireless-Instruction-Manual-1
Wireless response is poor after mounting the receiver in a metal enclosure.Inspect whether the antenna is inside the metal box and relocate it outside while retaining protected receiver mounting. The antenna must be outside rather than inside a metal box.Metal shielding can weaken the radio signal reaching the receiver antenna.
Basis: KTI-Wireless-Instruction-Manual-1
A new fob is not retained, or an older fob stops working after programming.Remove the pendant, verify shunt placement and prompt fob operation, observe the storage indication, and review which fobs were taught.Programming: pins 1 and 2; window: 3–5 seconds; storage indication: green for 2 seconds then red; holding mode: pins 2 and 3. Teaching a fifth fob drops the first programmed fob.A missed programming window, incorrect shunt position, or displacement of the first programmed fob by a fifth.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Enclosing the antenna inside a metal box along with the receiver.
  • ✕ Treating receiver shutdown as protection against pendant-operated movement.
  • ✕ Leaving the wired pendant connected during fob programming.
  • ✕ Teaching a fifth fob without warning that the first programmed fob will be dropped.
