LESSON 8 OF 10

Mechanical Wheel-Speed Faults and Air-Gap Verification

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Sequence mechanical wheel-speed diagnosis after correcting other present DTCs.
  • Distinguish brake, bearing, drum-tooth, contamination, and harness faults.
  • Apply maker-specific air-gap adjustment and towing verification.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Compatible ABS diagnostic scan tool — Identify present DTCs and recheck whether the mechanical wheel-speed DTC remains active after prescribed verification.
  • Wheel chocks, shop jack, and rated jack stands — Secure and support the trailer for wheel, brake, bearing, and sensor inspection; never rely on the jack alone.
  • Inspection light and mirror — Inspect rear drum teeth, the sensor barrel, axle-harness routing, and connector pins.
  • Feeler gauges — Measure sensor air gap at the chart's air-gap branch using the applicable maker's procedure.
  • Basic hand tools and cleaning brush — Access inspected components and remove sensor-barrel debris without damaging the sensor or wiring.
  • Shop grinder — Grind existing shims only when the documented adjustment method calls for reducing the gap; remeasure before verification.

Mechanical wheel-speed faults can accompany actuator short-to-battery faults and must be diagnosed only after other present DTCs are corrected. Lippert also notes that rotating a single wheel during maintenance for longer than 10 seconds can set this code; values vary by maker.

Check whether the affected brake has mechanically failed with the wheel locked and dragging. Inspect wheel bearings for excessive play, the teeth at the rear edge of the drum for damage or missing teeth, and the sensor barrel for debris.

Inspect the axle harness and connector-pin condition and location. When the chart reaches air-gap verification, Lippert specifies 1.00-1.75 mm; values vary by maker. The source directs adding shims to increase the gap or grinding existing shims to decrease it.

Use the chart's towing verification after the applicable correction. Lippert specifies towing over 30 mph for at least one mile and checking whether the DTC remains active; values vary by maker. If the chart reaches sensor replacement, replace the sensor, set the proper gap, and repeat the prescribed verification.

How It Works

Diagnostic order prevents false conclusions

Correct all other present DTCs before diagnosing the mechanical wheel-speed code, because this fault can accompany actuator short-to-battery faults. Lippert notes that rotating a single wheel during maintenance for longer than 10 seconds can set the code; values vary by maker. Ask about recent maintenance rather than treating the code alone as proof of a failed sensor.

Mechanical condition shapes the wheel-speed signal

A locked or dragging brake changes actual wheel rotation, while excessive bearing play can change the relationship between the sensor and drum teeth. Damaged or missing teeth interrupt the repeating target pattern, and sensor-barrel debris can interfere with reliable detection. Inspect these conditions and the axle harness and connector pins before concluding that the sensor itself has failed.

Air gap and verification complete the repair

At the air-gap branch, Lippert specifies 1.00-1.75 mm and directs adding shims to increase the gap or grinding existing shims to decrease it; values vary by maker. At the applicable verification branch, Lippert specifies towing over 30 mph for at least one mile and checking whether the DTC remains active; perform this only when the trailer is safe to tow and conditions permit. If the remaining active-fault branch directs sensor replacement, replace the sensor, set the proper gap, and repeat the prescribed verification.

⚠ CAUTION Do not diagnose the mechanical sensor code ahead of other active faults; the source specifically requires correcting the other DTCs first.

Diagnostic Chart

SymptomCheckSpec / ExpectedLikely cause & fix
Mechanical wheel-speed DTC appears with other present faults or after maintenance.Review all present DTCs and correct the other faults before mechanical-code diagnosis. Ask whether maintenance involved rotating a single wheel.A single wheel rotated for longer than 10 seconds can set the Lippert code; values vary by maker. An accompanying fault or maintenance-induced wheel-speed mismatch may explain the code without proving sensor failure.
Basis: Lippert-Anti-Lock-Braking-System
Affected wheel is locked or dragging, or the mechanical code persists after other faults are corrected.Check for mechanical brake failure, excessive bearing play, damaged or missing teeth at the rear edge of the drum, and debris on the sensor barrel. The lesson supplies no bearing-play limit or brake-drag measurement; use applicable service information for acceptance criteria.Brake failure can prevent normal rotation; bearing movement, tooth damage, or debris can disturb wheel-speed detection.
Basis: Lippert-Anti-Lock-Braking-System
Fault remains during the chart's harness and connector inspection.Inspect the axle harness for damage and inspect connector-pin condition and location. The lesson provides no electrical test limits or pin assignments; consult the applicable wiring and diagnostic information.Harness damage or incorrect or damaged connector pins can disrupt the sensor signal path.
Basis: Lippert-Anti-Lock-Braking-System
The diagnostic chart reaches air-gap verification or the fault remains after correction.Measure the gap, apply the documented shim adjustment if needed, and perform the applicable towing verification. Replace the sensor only if directed by the remaining active-fault branch, then set its gap and verify again.Lippert air gap: 1.00-1.75 mm. Towing verification: Over 30 mph for at least one mile. Values vary by maker.Incorrect spacing may impair detection; a remaining active fault requires following the chart rather than assuming the adjustment completed the repair.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Diagnosing the mechanical code before correcting other present DTCs.
  • ✕ Replacing a sensor without checking drag, bearing play, drum teeth, debris, and wiring.
  • ✕ Treating Lippert values as universal or reversing the documented shim adjustment.
  • ✕ Declaring success without prescribed verification, or towing with unresolved safety defects.
