Torsion Axle Torque
- Differentiate between torsion axle capacities based on mounting bolt diameter.
- Identify specific torque requirements for 2K capacity torsion axles.
- Match both capacity and bolt diameter to the applicable source row.
- Calibrated torque wrench — Apply the final specified torque to axle mounting bolts to ensure structural integrity.
- Socket set — Engage 1/2" and 5/8" bolt heads and nuts during the installation and tightening process.
- Vernier caliper — Verify the diameter of the mounting bolts to distinguish between 1/2" and 5/8" hardware.
How It Works
Importance of Specification Adherence
Properly torqued mounting bolts ensure the torsion axle remains securely indexed to the trailer frame. Under-torquing can lead to hardware loosening under vibration, while over-torquing can stress the 1/2" or 5/8" bolts beyond their yield point.
Capacity and bolt diameter are separate identifiers
The table associates axle capacity and mounting-bolt diameter with a torque range. Confirm both identifiers on the actual assembly. Do not infer a socket opening from the threaded bolt diameter or identify axle capacity from a bolt alone.
Do not confuse torque data with a repair diagnosis
A torque chart describes installation requirements; it does not prove why hardware is loose or authorize replacement, welding or straightening. Inspect the mounting condition and obtain the complete installation procedure before correcting a fault.
Torsion axle
| 2K — 1/2" bolts | 70–90 ft-lbs |
| 3.5K–10K — 5/8" bolts | 120–150 ft-lbs |
Diagnostic Chart
| Symptom | Check | Spec / Expected | Likely cause & fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axle mounting hardware is loose on a 2K capacity axle. | Verify bolt size and apply torque within the specified range for 1/2" bolts. | 70–90 ft-lbs | The hardware was not tightened to the specific 2K axle requirements. Basis: Lippert Component Torque Specifications QR-018 (Rev 08.22.18) |
| Mounting reference does not match the axle capacity. | Verify axle identification and the mounting bolt diameter. | Use the matching capacity and bolt row in QR-018. | A different application row may have been selected; confirm the complete installation instructions. | Bolt diameter is known but axle application is not. | Identify the axle capacity before choosing the torque range. | Confirm both identifiers before selecting a value. | Diameter alone does not establish the application. Basis: Lippert Component Torque Specifications QR-018 (Rev 08.22.18) |

Common Bay Mistakes
- ✕ Applying 2K axle torque values to a 3.5K axle.
- ✕ Using 5/8" bolt torque specs on 1/2" hardware.
- ✕ Assuming all torsion axles use the same torque regardless of capacity.
- ✕ Failing to verify bolt diameter before consulting the torque chart.
- ✕ Neglecting to use a calibrated torque wrench for final securement.
