Lippert M-006 Maintenance and Brake-Service Revisions

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Select the applicable maintenance revision and service cadence.
  • Adjust brakes and evaluate magnets and linings correctly.
  • Apply document-specific replacement and burnishing instructions.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Wheel chocks, floor jack and jack stands — Secure and support the trailer using equipment suitable for its load before wheel rotation or brake access.
  • Brake-adjusting spoon and screwdrivers — Adjust shoe clearance and hold the automatic lever away when backing off a self-adjusting brake.
  • Inspection light and mirror — Inspect magnet faces, exposed coils, lining damage and contamination.
  • Caliper or lining-thickness gauge — Measure lining thickness and compare it with the applicable document’s replacement boundary.
  • Basic hand-tool set — Remove and reinstall brake-access components according to the applicable equipment instructions.

CCD-0002421, M-006 Trailer Axle Maintenance, rev. 02.15.2025, gives a normal-use brake-service cadence of once a year and above-normal-use service at 3,000–6,000-mile increments (page 2). Abnormal braking requires immediate inspection rather than waiting for the next service date.

For manual adjustment, page 2 describes expanding shoes until the wheel is very difficult to turn, then backing off to free rotation with slight drag, approximately 10 clicks. Use a second screwdriver to hold the automatic lever away if backing off a self-adjusting brake. Set all brakes to the same clearance and restore the slot covers.

Page 3 requires a flat magnet face, immediate replacement if its coil is exposed and replacement for pronounced uneven wear. Reface the armature surface after magnet replacement and replace the opposite-side magnet as recommended for balanced braking. Contaminated or damaged shoes are replaced across both brakes on the axle.

This sheet’s lining-thickness instruction says replace below 1/16 inch. The older Lippert Axle 8K–16K manual uses 1/16 inch or less; preserve the document-specific boundary and confirm applicability instead of silently changing all brake questions to one rule.

Page 4 describes 20–30 brake applications over a 20-mph reduction, such as 40 to 20 mph, with cooling between applications. TI-086 has a different 20–50-application break-in procedure; keep it separate and use the installed equipment’s applicable instructions. The maintenance table’s individual row marks were not reliable in text extraction, so this lesson does not assign new intervals from that table.

How It Works

Applicability controls the maintenance decision

CCD-0002421, M-006 Trailer Axle Maintenance, rev. 02.15.2025, specifies normal-use brake service once a year and above-normal-use service at 3,000–6,000-mile increments; abnormal braking requires immediate inspection. Identify the installed axle and applicable instructions before selecting a schedule, because a newer sheet does not automatically supersede other equipment manuals. Record the revision used, resolve conflicts with Lippert and do not derive intervals from the maintenance table’s unreliable extracted row marks.

Clearance and friction condition determine brake response

Expand the shoes until the wheel is very difficult to turn, then back off to free rotation with slight drag, approximately 10 clicks; the final drag condition matters more than treating the click count as an absolute setting. Hold the automatic lever away with a second screwdriver when backing off a self-adjusting brake, set all brakes to the same clearance and restore the slot covers. Excessive clearance delays contact, while excessive drag generates heat; uneven magnet contact or contaminated linings can produce inconsistent braking.

Replacement boundaries and burnishing remain document-specific

M-006 requires lining replacement below 1/16 inch, whereas the older Lippert Axle 8K–16K manual specifies 1/16 inch or less; equality must therefore be evaluated against the applicable document rather than a universal rule. M-006 describes 20–30 brake applications over a 20-mph reduction, such as 40 to 20 mph, with cooling between applications; keep TI-086’s 20–50-application procedure separate. Burnishing develops mating contact between friction surfaces, while cooling limits heat buildup; use the applicable procedure only under safe road conditions.

⚠ CAUTION M-006 and older manuals use different lining boundaries and burnishing methods. Do not assume every newer document supersedes all other equipment instructions.

Diagnostic Chart

SymptomCheckSpec / ExpectedLikely cause & fix
Abnormal braking before the scheduled service dateInspect immediately rather than waiting for the calendar or mileage interval; confirm axle identity, use conditions and the applicable revision.Normal use: once a year. Above-normal use: 3,000–6,000-mile increments. Abnormal braking: immediate inspection.A service interval is not proof of brake condition; a developing adjustment or component fault may require attention sooner.

Wheel remains difficult to turn after adjustment or brake clearances differRepeat the documented adjustment, holding the automatic lever away when necessary; compare final clearances and restore slot covers.Expand until very difficult to turn, then back off to free rotation with slight drag, approximately 10 clicks. Set all brakes to the same clearance.Insufficient backoff, interference from the automatic lever or inconsistent adjustment can leave excessive or unequal shoe clearance.
Basis: ccd-0002421.pdf
Magnet face has pronounced uneven wear or an exposed coilInspect face flatness and coil exposure; plan armature resurfacing and the recommended opposite-side magnet replacement when replacing the magnet. The magnet face must be flat. Replace immediately if the coil is exposed and replace for pronounced uneven wear. Reface the armature surface after magnet replacement.Uneven contact concentrates wear and can impair consistent magnet action; an exposed coil meets the sheet’s immediate-replacement criterion.
Basis: ccd-0002421.pdf
Shoes are contaminated, damaged or near the lining replacement boundaryInspect shoes across both brakes on the axle, measure lining thickness and verify which manual governs the boundary.Replace contaminated or damaged shoes across both brakes on the axle. M-006: below 1/16 inch. Older Lippert Axle 8K–16K manual: 1/16 inch or less.Contamination and damage compromise friction behavior; confusing the document-specific thickness boundaries can produce the wrong replacement decision.

Basis: ccd-0002421.pdf. A likely cause is a hypothesis; confirm it with the applicable service procedure before repair.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Assuming a newer maintenance sheet supersedes every axle manual.
  • ✕ Treating approximately 10 clicks as a substitute for checking slight drag.
  • ✕ Replacing only the visibly affected shoe when axle-paired replacement is prescribed.
  • ✕ Combining burnishing procedures or inventing intervals from unreliable table extraction.

Quick Check

Practice only — not scored.

A lining measures exactly 1/16 inch. What is the correct document-specific interpretation?
After backing off approximately 10 clicks, the wheel remains very difficult to turn. What should the technician do?
