Hydraulic Fluid, Temperature and Seal Compatibility
- Select approved fluid from the installed equipment’s temperature table.
- Verify seal compatibility before changing hydraulic fluid.
- Set reservoir level using the correct cylinder position and fill guidance.
- Shop thermometer — Check ambient temperature when comparing operating conditions with the equipment’s fluid table.
- Flashlight — Inspect reservoir markings, fluid condition and accessible identification labels.
- Clean dedicated funnel — Add approved oil without introducing dirt or residue from another fluid.
- Clean sample container — Collect a fluid sample for visual inspection; appearance alone does not establish fluid identity.
- Lint-free wipes — Clean around the reservoir opening before removing the cap.
Fluid choice affects starting performance, valve operation and service life. Single-Acting-Installation-Instructions-INST0001.pdf, page 2, calls for premium hydraulic oil with anti-wear, rust/oxidation and foam inhibitors and good stability. Do not mix hydraulic fluids.
For the documented KTI installation, its temperature table lists ISO 15 for −20°F to +32°F, and ISO 22, ISO 32 or ATF Dexron III for +14°F to +120°F. The ranges overlap; these are listed choices for this equipment, not proof that any fluid with the same grade is interchangeable or suitable for every seal.
The installation guidance prohibits biodegradable hydraulic fluid with Buna seals and identifies optional Viton seals as compatible. Verify the actual seal material and approved product before changing fluids. Do not assume a biodegradable product is approved just because a viscosity chart includes it.
Oil-Viscosities.pdf, page 1, is a reference-only viscosity-versus-temperature chart. It lists several products and grades and explicitly marks −22°F points as extrapolated. Use the chart to understand trends, not to infer an exact operating limit or read a precise specification from the plotted curves.
Fill a single-acting unit to its full line with the cylinder fully retracted (INST0001 installation, page 1). The double-acting guide, page 1, specifies approximately one inch below the reservoir top and warns against dropping below half full during initial operation. Verify the unit-specific fill condition before topping off; filling during extension can cause overflow after retraction.
How It Works
Temperature changes viscosity, not approval
Cold oil resists flow and can make starting and valve response sluggish; oil that becomes too thin can increase internal leakage and weaken lubricating films. The documented KTI table lists −20°F to +32°F: ISO 15 and +14°F to +120°F: ISO 22, ISO 32 or ATF Dexron III; overlapping ranges do not establish universal interchangeability. Oil-Viscosities.pdf is reference-only and marks −22°F points as extrapolated, so its curves cannot establish exact operating limits.
Fluid chemistry and seal compatibility
The installation calls for premium hydraulic oil with anti-wear, rust/oxidation and foam inhibitors and good stability, and it prohibits mixing hydraulic fluids. Fluid chemistry can affect seal swelling, hardening and sealing ability independently of viscosity grade. Biodegradable hydraulic fluid is prohibited with Buna seals, while optional Viton seals are identified as compatible; verify the installed seals, approved product and supplier’s changeover instructions before substitution.
Cylinder position controls reservoir level
Cylinder movement transfers oil between the reservoir and actuator, so a level reading is meaningful only in the required fill condition. Fill the single-acting unit to its full line with the cylinder fully retracted; the double-acting guidance specifies approximately one inch below the reservoir top and warns against dropping below half full during initial operation. Filling during extension can cause overflow after retraction, while an insufficient reservoir supply can allow air ingestion and erratic operation.
Step-by-Step Procedure

| KTI listed cold-temperature range | −20°F to +32°F: ISO 15 |
| KTI listed warmer-temperature range | +14°F to +120°F: ISO 22, ISO 32 or ATF Dexron III |
| Biodegradable fluid with Buna seals | Not permitted by this installation guide |
Diagnostic Chart
| Symptom | Check | Spec / Expected | Likely cause & fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sluggish starting or valve response in cold conditions | Identify the installed unit and existing fluid, then compare anticipated operating temperatures with its applicable fluid table before condemning the pump or valves. | −20°F to +32°F: ISO 15; +14°F to +120°F: ISO 22, ISO 32 or ATF Dexron III. | Oil that is too viscous for the conditions can restrict flow; a grade match alone does not confirm product approval. Basis: Single-Acting-Installation-Instructions-INST0001.pdf |
| Seal leakage after a biodegradable-fluid substitution | Verify actual seal material and product approval from service records or component documentation; do not identify seal material by appearance alone. | Biodegradable hydraulic fluid with Buna seals is not permitted; optional Viton seals are identified as compatible. | Incompatible fluid chemistry can alter seal properties and impair sealing. Basis: Single-Acting-Installation-Instructions-INST0001.pdf |
| Single-acting reservoir overflows when the cylinder retracts | Determine whether the reservoir was topped off with the cylinder extended, then verify level in the required fill position. | Fill to the full line with the cylinder fully retracted. | Oil returning during retraction can exceed available reservoir space if the unit was filled during extension. Basis: Single-Acting-Installation-Instructions-INST0001.pdf |
| Persistent foaming or erratic motion during startup | Stop operation, safely secure the equipment, and inspect for suction-side leaks, loose connections and contaminated fluid before restarting. | No diagnostic acceptance limit is established here; use the installed equipment’s service guidance. | Air drawn into the suction path can produce foam and make hydraulic response inconsistent because air is compressible. Common Bay Mistakes
- ✕ Treating a viscosity chart as an approval list or exact operating-limit specification.
- ✕ Assuming matching viscosity grades guarantee matching chemistry or seal compatibility.
- ✕ Topping off unidentified oil instead of obtaining approved changeover instructions.
- ✕ Applying a reservoir fill rule without verifying cylinder arrangement and position.
