Demco: Operator Readiness and Preoperation Checks

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Confirm operator readiness before assembly or operation.
  • Inspect safety equipment and trailer condition before use.
  • Control backing hazards and secure equipment before servicing.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Flashlight — Illuminate bolts, worn components, welds, shields, and safety decals during inspection.
  • Inspection mirror — View concealed surfaces without entering a pinch point or crawling beneath unsecured equipment.
  • Shop rag — Wipe dirt from inspection surfaces and decals only after equipment is stopped and secured.
  • Wheel chocks — Help prevent unintended rolling during stationary inspection; supplement rather than replace the required shutdown procedure.

Demco requires operators to understand the equipment and its safety precautions before operation or assembly. Operators should be responsible adults, must not operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and should wear protective clothing and substantial shoes.

Keep safety shields installed, replacing any shield removed for repairs before use. Replace missing or unreadable safety decals, and do not paint over, remove, or deface safety signs.

Visually inspect for loose bolts, worn parts, and cracked welds, and make necessary repairs. Remove tools from the equipment, verify brake adjustment, and check that the towing vehicle has sufficient capacity using its owner's manual.

Keep the work area clear, particularly of children and animals. No one may stand between the tongue or hitch and the tow vehicle while it backs toward the equipment. Do not clean, lubricate, or adjust moving equipment; when stopping operation, set the tow vehicle's parking brake, shut off the engine, and remove the ignition key.

How It Works

Readiness includes people and information

Demco requires responsible adult operators who understand the equipment and its safety precautions, are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and wear protective clothing and substantial shoes. Shields and readable safety decals support safe operation by guarding hazards and keeping warnings available; they do not replace operator understanding.

Inspect the complete towing system

Look for loose bolts, worn parts, and cracked welds, and make necessary repairs before use. Looseness can allow damaging movement, wear can compromise fit, and cracks can propagate under repeated loading. Remove tools, verify brake adjustment, and confirm sufficient tow vehicle capacity using its owner's manual rather than judging suitability by appearance.

Separate people from movement

Keep the area clear of bystanders, especially children and animals, and never allow anyone between the tongue or hitch and the tow vehicle during backing. Closing clearance can trap a person before the driver can respond. Before cleaning, lubrication, or adjustment, stop the equipment, set the tow vehicle's parking brake, shut off the engine, and remove the ignition key.

⚠ CAUTION Do not allow anyone between the hitch or tongue and the towing vehicle during backing, and never service the equipment while it is moving.

Operator cannot explain the precautions or is not fit to operate.Review operation and safety precautions with all users; confirm responsible adult status, freedom from alcohol or drug influence, protective clothing, and substantial shoes.Operators must understand the equipment and its precautions before operation or assembly and meet the stated readiness requirements.Incomplete instruction, impairment, or inadequate protective clothing.

Preoperation inspection reveals damage or unresolved towing readiness.Inspect for loose bolts, worn parts, and cracked welds; remove tools, verify brake adjustment, and consult the tow vehicle owner's manual for capacity.Make necessary repairs and verify brake adjustment and sufficient towing capacity before use. The lesson supplies no torque values or brake-adjustment procedure.Uncorrected defects, incomplete preparation, or towing capacity not yet verified.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Treating operator experience as a substitute for reviewing safety precautions.
  • ✕ Leaving a shield off after repairs or painting over a safety decal.
  • ✕ Guessing brake adjustment or towing capacity instead of verifying it.
  • ✕ Entering the backing gap or servicing equipment before it is stopped and secured.

Quick Check

Practice only — not scored.

An operator wants to lubricate equipment immediately after towing. What must happen first?
A helper offers to stand between the tongue and tow vehicle to guide backing. What is the correct response?
The bay reports: Operator cannot explain the precautions or is not fit to operate. Which check addresses this condition?
