CURT 25050: Assembly, Torque, and Locking
- Identify and assemble the specified mounting hardware.
- Apply the correct torque and install required labels.
- Verify handle locking and bale-pin closure before movement.
- Torque wrench — Use a wrench rated to apply 400 ft-lbs and 300 ft-lbs to the specified hardware.
- Sockets — Select sockets that fully engage the mounting bolt heads and top lock nut.
- Holding wrench — Hold the opposing fastener securely while tightening the main mounting hardware.
- Ratchet — Install and snug mounting hardware before final tightening with the torque wrench.
- Inspection light — Illuminate washer placement, handle position, and bale-pin closure during inspection.
The supplied main mounting fastener is a 1-inch-8 by 5-1/2-inch Grade 8 hex bolt with a 1-inch top lock nut and two 1-inch flat washers. The front fastener is a 3/4-inch-10 by 1-1/4-inch Grade 5 hex bolt with a 3/4-inch concave washer.
Align the coupler with the mounting tube. Pass the 1-inch bolt and a washer through one side of the tube, then secure the assembly with the other washer and top lock nut. The manual permits the inner tube and coupler to be mounted in the illustrated orientation or rotated 180 degrees.
Install the 3/4-inch bolt and concave washer in the threaded hole through the front of the mounting tube. Tighten the 1-inch hardware to 400 ft-lbs and the 3/4-inch hardware to 300 ft-lbs.
Install the labels after powder coating as illustrated in the manual; enclosed labels must be attached after assembly and painting but before use. Before moving the trailer, turn the handle to the locked position to secure the ball and verify that the bale pin is closed.
How It Works
Hardware arrangement and load transfer
Align the coupler with the mounting tube, then install the 1-inch-8 by 5-1/2-inch Grade 8 hex bolt with a 1-inch flat washer on each side and the 1-inch top lock nut. Install the 3/4-inch-10 by 1-1/4-inch Grade 5 hex bolt and 3/4-inch concave washer in the front threaded hole. Correct hardware and washer placement support the intended load path; the manual permits the illustrated inner-tube and coupler orientation or rotation through 180 degrees.
Torque establishes joint clamping
Tighten the 1-inch hardware to 400 ft-lbs and the 3/4-inch hardware to 300 ft-lbs. Tightening stretches a fastener and develops clamping force, helping resist joint movement and fretting. A fastener that feels tight is not evidence that the specified torque has been applied.
Labels and locking are release requirements
Attach the enclosed labels after assembly and painting or powder coating, in the locations illustrated in the manual, and before use. Before moving the trailer, turn the handle to the locked position to secure the ball and verify that the bale pin is closed. Treat handle position and bale-pin closure as separate checks; neither substitutes for the other.

Diagnostic Chart
| Symptom | Check | Spec / Expected | Likely cause & fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware identity or washer placement is uncertain. | Compare bolt dimensions and grades, nut type, and washer placement with the specified arrangement before tightening. | Main: 1-inch-8 by 5-1/2-inch Grade 8 hex bolt, 1-inch top lock nut, and two 1-inch flat washers. Front: 3/4-inch-10 by 1-1/4-inch Grade 5 hex bolt with a 3/4-inch concave washer. | Substituted hardware, an omitted washer, or incorrect assembly placement. Basis: Curt-Spec-Sheet |
| Assembly torque has not been documented or completed. | Confirm the torque requirement for each fastener and complete controlled tightening with an appropriate torque wrench. | Tighten the 1-inch hardware to 400 ft-lbs and the 3/4-inch hardware to 300 ft-lbs. | Final tightening was skipped, or the torque requirements were confused. Basis: Curt-Spec-Sheet |
| Required labels are missing or covered by coating. | Compare label presence and placement with the manual illustration before releasing the assembly for use. | Attach enclosed labels after assembly and painting or powder coating, as illustrated in the manual, before use. | Labels were omitted or installed before finishing. Basis: Curt-Spec-Sheet |
| Handle is not locked or bale pin is open. | Keep the trailer stationary, turn the handle to locked, and verify that the bale pin is closed. Do not release for movement if either condition remains unmet. | Do not move the trailer until the handle is locked and the bale pin is closed. | The pre-movement locking sequence is incomplete. Basis: Curt-Spec-Sheet. A likely cause is a hypothesis; confirm it with the applicable service procedure before repair.
Common Bay Mistakes
- ✕ Swapping the main and front hardware torque requirements.
- ✕ Omitting a flat washer or substituting for the concave washer.
- ✕ Applying labels before coating or guessing their locations.
- ✕ Assuming a locked handle also confirms bale-pin closure.
