LESSON 3 OF 10

Coupler & Jack Inspection

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Verify compatibility between the hitch ball size and the trailer coupler.
  • Inspect couplers for structural integrity including worn latches and cracked welds.
  • Perform hardware torque procedures according to manufacturer-specific field references.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Hitch pin with mechanical retainer — Secure the hitch to the tow vehicle receiver to prevent accidental detachment.
  • Torque wrench — Apply specific torque values for Curt and Demco hardware as found in the Field Reference.
  • Flashlight — Inspect the interior of the coupler for latch wear and the exterior for weld cracks.

Use the correct ball size and a hitch pin with a mechanical retainer.

Inspect couplers for worn latches and cracked welds; refer to the Curt and Demco values in the Field Reference for hardware torque.

Never stand between the tongue and tow vehicle while backing.

How It Works

Mechanical Compatibility

The foundation of a safe hookup is the correct ball size. Using an incorrect ball size can lead to mechanical failure of the coupler interface or accidental uncoupling during transit.

Hardware Fastening Standards

Standardized torque is required for coupler hardware. Technicians must refer to the Curt and Demco values provided in the Field Reference rather than relying on generic estimates.

Personnel Safety Zones

A critical safety protocol is maintaining a clear zone during hitching operations. Never stand between the trailer tongue and the tow vehicle while the vehicle is backing into position.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Using a hitch ball that does not match the coupler size requirements.
  • ✕ Standing between the tongue and tow vehicle during the backing phase.
  • ✕ Using a hitch pin that lacks a mechanical retainer.
  • ✕ Overlooking hairline cracks in coupler welds during inspection.
  • ✕ Applying generic torque to Curt or Demco hardware without checking the Field Reference.

Quick Check

Practice only — not scored.

Where should a technician find the specific torque requirements for Curt and Demco hardware?
What is a mandatory requirement for the hitch pin used during hookup?
What action is prohibited when the tow vehicle is backing toward the trailer tongue?
