Hub Removal and Brake Dust Control

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Prepare and support the trailer safely for hub removal.
  • Remove hub components without dropping or contaminating parts.
  • Control brake dust during cleaning and prepare components for inspection.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Wheel chocks — Prevent trailer movement during preparation and removal.
  • Floor jack and jack stands — Lift at the frame and support the trailer with stands positioned under the frame.
  • Lug wrench — Slightly loosen lug nuts before lifting, then remove them after the trailer is securely supported.
  • Pliers and hand wrenches — Remove the cotter pin and spindle nut while controlling loose components.
  • Seal puller — Remove the grease seal for disposal.
  • Drip pan and aerosol brake cleaner — Wet-clean brake components and collect runoff without dispersing dust.

Prepare for hub removal on level ground, stabilize the trailer, and chock the tires. Slightly loosen the lug nuts before lifting. Lift at the frame and place jack stands under the frame; neither the axle nor the suspension is a trailer lifting or support point.

Remove the wheel and keep it away from positions where leaning it against the trailer or jacks could cause instability. Establish a clean surface for removed parts. Carefully remove the dust cover, then remove and discard the cotter pin because it is a single-use item.

Support the hub while removing the spindle nut, washer, and outer bearing cone so parts do not fall. Slide the hub and drum off carefully. Remove the grease seal with a seal puller and discard it; the removed seal is not reusable.

Older linings may contain asbestos or other hazardous dust. Use appropriate protection, including a mask and gloves, and aerosol brake cleaner with a drip pan below the work. Clean the drum, backing plate, magnet arm, and shoes, removing grease, oil, and dust before inspecting for damage. Do not blow dust away with compressed air or use dry brushing or dry rags.

How It Works

Stable support before disassembly

Park on level ground, stabilize the trailer, chock the tires, and slightly loosen the lug nuts before lifting. Lift and support the trailer at the frame, never at the axle or suspension; properly placed jack stands are required before crawling underneath. Keep the removed wheel away from positions where leaning it against the trailer or jacks could disturb support.

Control the hub and protect removed parts

Prepare a clean parts surface, carefully remove the dust cover, and remove and discard the cotter pin. Support the hub while removing the spindle nut, washer, and outer bearing cone, then slide the hub and drum off carefully to prevent dropped parts and unintended contact with bearing surfaces. Remove the grease seal with a seal puller and discard it because the removed seal is not reusable.

Contain dust before inspecting

Older brake linings may contain asbestos or other hazardous dust, and compressed air or dry cleaning can suspend that material where it can be inhaled. Use appropriate protection, including a mask and gloves, and aerosol brake cleaner with a drip pan beneath the work. Remove grease, oil, and dust from the drum, backing plate, magnet arm, and shoes before inspecting for damage; do not use compressed air, dry brushing, or dry rags.

⚠ CAUTION Never crawl under a trailer without properly placed jack stands, and never disperse potentially asbestos-containing brake dust with compressed air or dry cleaning.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Treating the axle or suspension as a lifting or support point.
  • ✕ Leaning the removed wheel against the trailer or jacks.
  • ✕ Reusing the removed cotter pin or grease seal.
  • ✕ Blowing or wiping brake dust away before wet cleaning.
