LESSON 2 OF 10

Adjusting Spring Tension

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Perform spring tension adjustments on the MORryde Zero-G ramp door system.
  • Verify door behavior to determine if tightening or loosening the adjustment bolt is required.
  • Observe safety limitations regarding hook positioning to prevent spring disconnection.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • 3/4" socket — Used to rotate the adjusting bolt clockwise to increase tension or counter-clockwise to decrease tension.
  • Socket wrench or ratchet — Provides the mechanical leverage needed to turn the 3/4" socket during adjustment.
  • Non-marring pry tool — Used to safely remove the covers over the adjusting bolts on both sides of the ramp.

How It Works

Mechanical Balance Principles

The Zero-G ramp door uses spring tension to offset the weight of the door. If the door is too heavy to lift, the spring tension must be increased. Conversely, if the door is too light or difficult to close, the spring tension must be reduced.

Adjustment Directionality

Tension is controlled by the rotation of the adjusting bolts. Clockwise rotation tightens the mechanism for a heavy door, while counter-clockwise rotation loosens it for a door that feels too light.

Hook and Plate Critical Clearance

The spring mechanism relies on a hook remaining engaged with the bolt plate. Loosening the adjustment bolt too far brings the hook into contact with the plate, which creates a risk of the spring disconnecting from the assembly.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Loosening the bolt until the hook touches the bolt plate.
  • ✕ Failing to remove the covers before attempting to turn the bolts.
  • ✕ Rotating the bolt counter-clockwise when the door is already too heavy.
  • ✕ Attempting adjustment with an incorrectly sized socket.
  • ✕ Neglecting to reinstall the protective covers after adjustment is complete.
