Brakes, Oil Caps & Bolt Grades
- Apply specific torque values for light and heavy-duty brake mounting hardware.
- Correctly identify torque requirements for flange bolts based on diameter and grade.
- Execute proper installation of oil caps to prevent component damage and leaks.
- Calibrated torque wrench — Apply precise rotational force to brake mounting, oil caps, and flange bolts per specifications.
- Socket set — Fit various fastener sizes including 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4" bolt heads and brake mounting hardware.
- Inspection mirror — Verify the presence and condition of the oil cap O-ring before installation.
- Clean rag — Ensure sealing surfaces on the hub and oil cap are free of debris to prevent leaks.
Over-tightening the oil cap can damage the sealing O-ring and cause a leak.
How It Works
Fastener Grade and Flange Torque
Bolts of the same diameter have different torque capacities depending on their strength rating. Grade 8 flange bolts consistently require higher torque values than Grade 5 counterparts across 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4" diameters. Using Grade 5 torque on a Grade 8 bolt may result in insufficient clamping force.
Oil Cap Sealing Integrity
The oil cap relies on a sealing O-ring to prevent lubrication loss. While it must be secure, applying force beyond the 25 ft-lbs limit can damage the O-ring, leading to leaks that compromise bearing lubrication.
Select the application before the value
The chart separates brake mounting by axle capacity, disc caliper fasteners, oil caps and flange bolts by diameter and grade. Identify the actual application before selecting a row; a value that belongs to another fastener is not interchangeable.

Diagnostic Chart
| Symptom | Check | Spec / Expected | Likely cause & fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil leak appearing at the wheel end hub face. | Inspect the oil cap O-ring for deformation or tearing. | 25 ft-lbs | Over-tightening the oil cap damaged the sealing O-ring. Basis: Lippert Component Torque Specifications QR-018 (Rev 08.22.18) |
| Fastener failure or loosening on a 5/8"-11 Grade 8 flange bolt. | Check torque level against the specific grade rating for that diameter. | 170 ft-lbs | The bolt was torqued to the Grade 5 specification (135 ft-lbs) instead of the Grade 8 requirement. | Disc brake caliper movement or vibration. | Verify the torque of the guide and mounting bolts. | 40–50 ft-lbs | Fasteners are outside the specific range for disc caliper mounting. Basis: Lippert Component Torque Specifications QR-018 (Rev 08.22.18) |

Common Bay Mistakes
- ✕ Over-tightening oil caps beyond 25 ft-lbs, causing O-ring damage.
- ✕ Failing to distinguish between Grade 5 and Grade 8 torque values for flange bolts.
- ✕ Using drum brake mounting torque for disc brake caliper guide bolts.
- ✕ Neglecting to check the bolt diameter before selecting a torque value.
