LESSON 1 OF 10

Checking Axle Alignment

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO
  • Identify the causes of trailer dog-tracking and rapid tire wear.
  • Perform measurements from the coupler center to the front axle to verify squareness.
  • Assess axle-to-axle spacing and mechanical hardware integrity before diagnosing bent axles.
TOOLS AT THE BAY
  • Plumb line — Drop from the coupler center to establish a precise measurement point on the ground.
  • Tape measure — Measure distances from the coupler plumb point to axle ends and between axles.
  • Level — Ensure the trailer is positioned correctly on level ground before taking measurements.
  • Wrenches and Sockets — Verify that spring hangers, equalizers, and U-bolts are tight and undamaged.

Misalignment makes a trailer track to one side (dog-tracking) and wears tires quickly.

Measure from the coupler center (kingpin on a fifth wheel) to the same point on each end of the front axle; the two measurements should match.

On tandem or triple axles, measure axle-to-axle on both sides; the spacing should be equal on each side.

Check that spring hangers, equalizers and U-bolts are tight and undamaged before deciding an axle is bent.

How It Works

The impact of misalignment

Misalignment causes a trailer to track to one side, a condition known as dog-tracking. This condition results in rapid tire wear and poor handling.

Establishing a reference point

The coupler center, or the kingpin on a fifth wheel, serves as the primary reference point. Measuring from this center to the same point on each end of the front axle determines if the axle is square to the frame.

Tandem and Triple Axle Spacing

On multi-axle trailers, the distance between axles must be measured on both the left and right sides. The spacing should be equal on both sides to ensure the axles are parallel.

Common Bay Mistakes

  • ✕ Measuring for alignment on unlevel ground.
  • ✕ Neglecting to drop a plumb line from the coupler center for measurement accuracy.
  • ✕ Assuming an axle is bent without checking if U-bolts or hangers are loose.
  • ✕ Failing to ensure the trailer is level before taking readings.
  • ✕ Using different measurement points on opposite ends of the axle.
